Multi‐layered printed circuit boards are a very common choice for applications involving complex, dense circuitry designed into a small space. They consist of 3-20 conductive layers and a single solder mask insulating layer on the top and bottom. Standard overall thicknesses range from .031” ‐ .125”. The use of multiple layers significantly reduces the size of the circuit, which is beneficial in manufacturing assemblies for compact products.

The ability to provide EMI shielding layers makes these circuits useful for complex, highly sensitive electronic applications such as motherboards and radio frequency (RF) boards. All component types can be attached to multilayer PCBs, and current-carrying capabilities of signal traces ranges from a few milliamps to several amps.
